The story of Chapple Architecture starts back with David Chapple. After graduating from Architecture School in 1963, David moved to Palmerston North. Initially working for Walker & Love, becoming a registered Architect in 1964, David left to work for Jack Cantlon in 1966. Jack took David on as a partner in around 1969, and the firm became Cantlon & Chapple.

Around 1971, Cantlon & Chapple and two other firms merged to create Group Architects & Engineers. Individually, the firms were competing for a limited amount of work, while larger projects always seemed to be done from out of town practices. The thought was that in combining resources they could compete on the larger jobs. When Group Architects & Engineers began there were 6 partners, 2 associates, and 12 staff. The office was located at 238 Broadway Avenue.

One by one, partners left the company, until in 1983 David took full ownership of the business, when the last partner moved to Brisbane.

David has been involved heavily with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and has worked on Caccia Birch House, and Wharerata at Massey, as two examples.

Susie started working for David in 1986. Working along side David loyally for 20 years, Susie was around during jobs such as The Science Centre & Manawatu Museum, and the Downtown complex (including the cinemas). Not only a sound building construction knowledge, Susie also has the ability in making imaginative decisions on colours, furnishings, and interior design. Susie purchased the business in 2006.

With the name Chapple associated with architecture in Palmerston North since the 1960’s, and Susie’s years of experience and knowledge, this longstanding, reliable company has a solid platform to draw from.

Competent in both commercial and residential work, Chapple Architecture are able provide services in both base-build and fit out projects. See the projects page for examples of some of their work.

Susie is a Licensed Building Practitioner Design 3, approved to design all buildings. She is also a member of the professional body Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ).
